Wrap-up: Learning how to take direction

Once you've mastered knit and purl, the next adventure beyond scarves
and dishcloths usually requires using a pattern as a roadmap. This
week we explored basic pattern reading in the first group and mapped
out plans for our next project in the second group.

Basic pattern terms
The first time you pick up a pattern, it may look like it was written
in a foreign language. This is because kniitting uses a unique set of
abbreviations to shorten the pattern. We completed a worksheet that
covered basic pattern terms and discussed what they meant. We also
talked about how patterns are laid out and how repeated sections are
marked.  Next week, we will apply what we have learned by designing
our own 8x8 blanket square. Beginners, don't despair! We will have
plenty of time to work on basic stitches together during open knitting.

In the second group, we decided to get ready for a custom sweater
project for January. We made a list of techniques that we would like
to cover before beginning our project. Next week, please bring ideas
for elements you would like to include in your sweater project for the
show and tell.

We also are planning to have a social in January so all members can
get together. We hope to have a yarn swap so start sorting through
your stash now! If you would be willing to help out with this event,
please send us an email.

Margaret, who donated yarn for our community project, stopped by to
share an audio book that she enjoyed, "The Knitting Circle" by Ann Hood.

Solrun's Tip of the Week: When knitting in the round, swap your first
and last cast ons when you join. This will eliminate the gap in your
first row.
